Hi, I'm Jason! I founded LightCandi for a few reasons.

 

The first reason is simple:

I wanted to create cool clip-on lights -- for skateboarders, cyclists, roller skaters and, really, anybody with an eye for good taste -- as a form of self-expression.

​

The second reason is personal, and far more important: 

I wanted to create a product that didn't just look cool. I created LightCandi lights to help make people safer. When I was younger, two of my closest friends were struck and killed by vehicles while they were skateboarding at night.

 

Years later, in 2014, my young daughter and nieces were almost struck by a car filled with distracted teen drivers while they, too, were skating at sunset.

I lost my father to a vehicle collision just a few days before Father's Day. He was bicycling to a convenience store in Las Vegas, after sunset, when a driver struck him. He had been missing and facing homelessness. My brother is also missing and facing homelessness. Unhoused people face potentially fatal encounters with motorists every day.

​

Thousands of skaters, cyclists, and unhoused people are killed by cars every year.

It's estimated that two cyclists are killed by motorists every single day in America, often at night. SkateboardingSafety.org has found that nearly all skateboarding deaths are caused by road collisions -- again, many occur after sunset.

 

Unhoused people are 45 times more likely to die of a transportation-related death than the general population, with the likelihood increasing after dark.

"We have to make people safer, and more visible, at night."

That's what authorities who track these deaths all say. And that's why I created LightCandi: So that others who skate, bike, and who walk our streets at night don't suffer the tragic fates of the people closest to me.
